Life after call center
Hi, how are you. I'm the webmaster for top ten most. And I was a call center agent once, when I was 17 years old. I stopped school and went on to be a call center agent. I stayed in the call center industry for almost 2 years. But I went back to school when I was 19, I just felt like there is no career in that industry only a job. When I was there I met a lot of people from all walks of life, I've been colleagues with a doctor, under grads, moms, nurses, gay people, homophobics.. young and old people. It's just a mixture of culture.
But mostly my co-agents were in their 20's. These guys were a mixture of graduates and undergrads from UAAP schools to Uknown Univesity. They all had one thing in common, they wanted fast money an active lifestyle...and most of my colleagues, couldn't see things 10 years from the present. I mean they never really thought of the future, I meant the can't be call center agents when they're 55 right!? I mean they can but, is that it? That's why I left. No future and the people in the industry seemed stuck.... in being a call center agents. And I didn't want to be one of them.
Fast forward time, I'm now a graduate of Psychology , 23 years old and I'm a Recruitment Associate in an international company. And as a Recruiter, I saw why agents seemed stuck. It's because most them only had 1 skill, and that's communication skills. Although it is important and a requirement in most jobs, you really get no where with just that. Another thing is, most tenured agents are receiving Php20,000 plus a month and these guys are 25 above years old already. Most of them can't imagine a life where they will be in an entry level post again receiving Php13,000 a month or even less, and most companies these days would discriminate agents, cause most do have attitude problems. Besides who would hire a 28 year old office staff with no experience in clerical works. I mean would you!?!? With that kind of profile. It would be hard.
So most agents, I worked with when I was a teenager are still in the industry. Some are able to get out and find a better job., some become research analyst, back office support,.. but rarely in a regular job.
The call center industry in the Philippines is still young, so it's a little early to say what will happen to these young agents right now. BUT IF YOUR AN AGENT READING THIS. THINK ABOUT YOUR FUTURE, BECAUSE THERE IS NO FUTURE IN A CALL CENTER. YOU ONLY HAVE A JOB NOT A CAREER.
Think about it.
